Flying, Exploring and the Endless Arrogance of Mankind

When I think of flying, two scenes appear in my mind. One is Icarus flying with wings made of wax, and despite the warning of his father Dadalus, when he takes off, he gets arrogant and goes higher and higher, so that his wings melt and fall in the sun. (Of course Peter Brugel is one of the most beautiful illustrators of this.)

The other is Andrei Tarkovsky's attempt to fly with a primitive balloon at the very beginning of Andrei Rublev. The attempt to fly in the movie also ends with the hero crashing to the ground, overjoyed and arrogant. Humanity's adventure with the sky, with God, with the stars and therefore with flight continues unabated. Mankind's desire to go to faraway places and make them home or conquer them has now extended to other planets. However, before taking off and flying so high, shouldn't we have kept the ground on which our feet stand strong and healthy...

The great destruction and devastation we have wreaked on natural resources has brought about the end of many species, as well as our own demise. I wish we could satisfy our sense of curiosity and exploration without harming basic resources and each other, but our greed has been, is and will be an obstacle to the proper use of this opportunity.

The result is; Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. It means we shouldn't acted imprudently because we can lost what we had in pursuit of what we thought would be better
